Copper Canyon is a benchmark property in the Rancon Accomplishment portfolio. It was acquired from the Resolution Trust Corporation in 1995. Rancon's Development team went to work immediately on entitlement for a master-planned residential community. While the City of Murrieta approved the project's plans, a group of no-growth advocates filed a CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) lawsuit and a referendum to stop the project. Not only did Rancon win the law suit, but also won the referendum getting a majority of the residents who first opposed the project to vote for it. The project was sold to Merchant Builders who built a model community.
